As diversity in American classrooms continues to grow, so will the need for professional educational interpretation services. Providing educational interpretation services promotes the development of English language skills and supports the educational goals and outcomes of this particular demographic of student. Making adaptations and accommodations to aid in the educational progression of these students is a must, if there are not resources and solutions to combat language barriers faced by children and their parents, advancement within American school systems will be out of their reach.

English Language Learners:

There are many students who are identified as English language learners (ELLs) and participate in a language assistance program within American school systems that aids in becoming proficient in the English language. In 2015, there were 4.8 million (9.5%) students in the United States who were ELLs.

California has the highest percentage of ELLs among public school students, at 21.0%, followed by Texas and Nevada, who are both at 16.8%. Nineteen states including the District of Columbia had percentages of ELL students 6.0% or higher but less than 10.0%. Fourteen states had percentages that were 3.0% or higher but less than 6.0%.

According to a study conducted in 2017, by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, schools are falling short on providing adequate instruction and support for this particular student demographic. Limited English proficiency is putting a damper on the academic success of these students who are finding themselves held up by a language barrier. Oftentimes parents are not able to intervene and aid in the child’s learning and progression due to their own limited understanding and ability to speak the English language.

Statistics Regarding Linguistic Diversity In American Classrooms:

  • During 2016, 22% of children, which equates to a little more than 12 million kids total, spoke languages other than English at home.
  • Over the last 10 years that number has increased by 1.2 million kids (2%).
  • There continues to be substantial increases in the District of Columbia, which has risen 6%, meaning 19% of children in DC speak a language other than English at home.
  • New Jersey is up 5%, meaning 30% of children in the state speak a language other than English at home.
  • There are 2.4 million kids in American who struggle with or who do not know how to speak English fluently.

Use On-Site Interpretation, Over-The-Phone (OPI) Interpretation and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) When Communicate with Non-English Speaking Parents of ELL Children:

Providing access to communication is a necessary component when language barriers are faced in the classroom. A teacher may need to speak to a parent for a typical parent/teacher conference, a psychology review, behavioral issues amongst a plethora of other variables. It’s vital when speaking to the parents of ELL kids, the proper steps are taken to ensure communication can be facilitated. Professional language service companies (LSC) offer various interpretation services such as on-site interpretation, over-the-phone (OPI) interpretation as well as video remote interpreting (VRI). Everyone of these services aim to establish a bridge in order to transcend linguistic boundaries. Having a parent onboard with plans and strategies that will support and develop a child’s educational growth is invaluable, but how can that happen if they are not able to understand the information or express their thoughts on the matter.

Providing professional interpretation services when in situations like this can make a world of difference in not only the lives of the children and parents but it can also alleviate the stress placed on the teacher when language barriers are faced in the classroom. Interpretation services foster many forms of development and maximize learning amongst the youth of our nation. Don’t allow ELL students to fall between the cracks of our educational system, provide solutions that support the advancement and growth of our valued youth and allow them to flourish despite having to hurdle the obstacle of a language barrier.
